Types of PhD in Germany: Industry, University & Graduate Schools
Most international applicants treat "PhD in Germany" like a single thing. It isn't. There are at least four meaningfully different paths, and the one you pick decides your funding, your supervisor relationship, how long you'll actually be there, and, honestly, how easy it'll be to land an industry job afterwards.
I did my own PhD inside the German university system, and I now supervise PhD students from the other side of the desk at a German university. I've also worked closely with applied research institutes and industry teams as an Applied AI Engineer. Here's the honest breakdown of what each path actually means, and which one fits which goal.
The four PhD paths in Germany at a glance

Path 1: Individual PhD with a university professor
This is the classic German PhD and still the most common. You find a professor whose research aligns with yours, they take you on at their chair (Lehrstuhl), and you become a Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter (a research assistant) with a contract under the public sector pay scale (TV-L E13).
There's no central admissions process. You apply directly to the professor, usually by cold email, sometimes through an advertised position. The professor decides. That's it.
What life actually looks like
- You're an employee, not a student. Your PhD is one of several duties: you'll also teach, supervise Master's theses, write proposals, and do chair admin.
- Very little formal structure. No mandatory coursework. No fixed milestones. No cohort. Just you, your supervisor, and the thesis.
- Officially three years. Realistically four to five.
Best for: people who want academic careers, high autonomy, and the deepest research credentials. Risky if: you don't know your supervisor well. Supervisor dependency is enormous on this path.

Path 2: Structured PhD program (Graduiertenkolleg / grad school)
This is the German answer to the US-style PhD: a cohort-based program with coursework in the first one or two semesters, a thesis committee instead of a single supervisor, fixed milestones, and a defined three-year clock.
Most are funded by the DFG as Graduiertenkollegs or sit inside a faculty as a "graduate school." They run formal admissions with deadlines, application portals, and sometimes interviews. Many are fully in English and explicitly designed to attract international applicants.
The catch most people miss
Funding splits into two very different things:
- TV-L employment contract: you're an employee with full social security, pension contributions, parental leave, unemployment insurance.
- Stipend (Stipendium): tax-free in many cases, but no pension, no unemployment insurance, and your visa status sits differently.
That difference is one of the biggest blind spots in PhD applications to Germany. I'm writing a separate deep-dive on PhD salary in Germany: what you really take home, but if you only remember one thing: a stipend that looks higher than a TV-L contract on paper is often worth less in practice.

Germany has four major non-university research organisations. Together they employ thousands of PhD students. Each has a different flavour, and choosing well matters more than choosing the most famous one.
Max Planck (MPG)
Pure basic research. Extremely prestigious. The International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS) are structured, English-language, very well-funded, and very competitive. If you want a top academic career (postdoc at a top university, faculty track), this is the strongest signal you can get on a German CV. Best for: future professors.
Helmholtz Association
Mission-driven big science. Includes DESY, KIT, DLR, GFZ, Jülich. Engineering, physics, energy, climate, health. Mix of structured graduate schools and individual PhDs. Massive infrastructure (supercomputers, particle accelerators, satellites). Best for: large-scale science with strong technical resources.
Leibniz Association
Applied research and knowledge transfer across many fields: economics, social sciences, life sciences, environment. Broader and more varied than the other three. Often interdisciplinary. Best for: applied research with policy or societal relevance.
Fraunhofer
This is the bridge between academia and industry. Fraunhofer institutes do contract research for companies: your PhD project is often funded by a real industry client. Most Fraunhofer PhDs are employed by a Fraunhofer institute and supervised by a partnering university professor (the institute itself can't award degrees).
If you know you want to land in industry after the PhD, Fraunhofer is the strongest in-system path. The network effect is enormous: Bosch, Siemens, SAP, and most German engineering and AI firms hire heavily from Fraunhofer alumni. Best for: industry exit with strong applied research credentials.
Path 4: Industry PhD
You're employed by a company. Your PhD project is your job. A university professor co-supervises, you defend at the university. The company pays you a real industry salary, usually with a contract structured either as full-time research or a 50% / 75% split with protected thesis time.
Common employers in Germany: Bosch, Siemens, SAP, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Continental, Volkswagen, plus growing numbers of AI startups and mid-sized firms. Search company career portals for Doktorand or PhD student positions: they exist, they're just less visible than university listings.
The honest trade-offs
- Pay: often 50–70k€+, sometimes with bonuses. Significantly above any university option.
- Industry exit: strongest signal you can give a future employer. You've already done the work.
- Constraints: publication restrictions, IP ownership, business priorities that can pull you off your thesis. Some industry PhDs take longer because of this, not shorter.
- Academic freedom: limited. Your topic is tied to a business need.

How to pick: a short decision framework
- Want to stay in academia? → IMPRS (Max Planck), Helmholtz, or a top university individual PhD with a well-published supervisor.
- Want to land in industry afterwards? → Industry PhD or Fraunhofer. Either signals industry readiness without you having to argue for it later.
- Want structure, deadlines, peer support? → Structured program or IMPRS.
- Want autonomy and the deepest academic credentials? → Individual PhD with a strong supervisor.
- Still figuring it out? → Default to a Fraunhofer or university PhD in a field with strong transferable skills (ML, data, software, applied physics, biotech). Avoid pure-niche basic science if your likely exit is industry.
A few things they don't tell you
- Almost all PhDs in Germany are paid. The unpaid PhD is not the German default, but stipend, scholarship, and employment contract are very different things, and the difference matters for taxes, pension, parental leave, and visa status.
- "Structured" vs "individual" is the single biggest decision after path. I'm writing a separate deep-dive on that one. They look similar from outside, they feel completely different from inside.
- The supervisor matters more than the institute. A bad supervisor at Max Planck is worse than a great supervisor at a regional university. Talk to current PhD students before you sign anything.
- English is fine for STEM and most natural sciences at IMPRS, Fraunhofer, Helmholtz, and many universities. Less common in humanities and at smaller universities, but possible.
- Your prior degree needs Anabin / ZAB recognition for the visa. Start that process before you accept anything.
